Aesthetic quality often appears in simplicity.  A forbidding landscape  grates against our needs for warmth and security but, nevertheless, we are drawn to such views.  Views such as these allow us to shed human limitations and touch infinite space for brief moments.

Stone speaks of durability, strength, and presence in a landscape.  It can provide an anchoring counterpoint to the liminal nature of plantings, offering a defining structure that characterizes the garden.  It is tempting to rely on familiar stone structures when designing a space since simple stone walls are a useful solution for defining boundaries and creating practical seating options.  But by returning to the source of masterful stonework, we refresh our sense of the potential beauty in stone and approach the garden with a new perspective.
